Redwoods is a group of life-long learners committed to supporting each other on the journey of design system maturity.
Our Mission
We're creators, not just consumers. We're teachers, not just learners. We're here to challenge and expand each other's perspectives, and to push the design system community forward in sustainable and meaningful ways.
Our Values
Redwoods has three core values that provide the foundation of every interaction we have. These are actual, not aspirational. If you’re a member of Redwoods, this is what we expect of you. And everyone is encouraged to speak up when these values are not upheld. We’re not perfect, so we won’t always get this right. But we are on a mission to be better humans and better practitioners.
Stay in learning mode.
Everyone, from junior to senior, has something to teach you. Redwoods encourages continuous and open learning, across experience level and discipline.
Be generous with your knowledge.
Learning is great, but it’s not enough. Redwoods members are creators, not just consumers—we analyze, we synthesize, and then we offer our new understanding back to the larger community.
We’re in this together.
Respect is our default. Redwoods is a safe and open community where everyone’s experiences and perspectives are valued. We’re here to support, advise, and guide you throughout your systems career.

What will we actually do?
I've learned that the design system community has a LOT of ideas for things they want to do. In an effort to support that organic approach to learning, we’ll be keeping the structure somewhat loose. We’ll have a weekly “standup” in Discord to get things moving, and there will be opportunities each week to join video calls to connect, collaborate, and challenge each other. What we do in those calls will depend on what’s happening with and what’s needed from our membership.
Introducing, The Quarterly!
One key component for Redwoods is that we’ll be hosting two or three online events (the first one in June) called The Quarterly. These will give us a goal to work toward and they’ll create opportunities for us to share the big takeaways from each quarter. If we’re going to push the industry forward in meaningful ways, we have to make space to synthesize and share out what we’ve learned! The Quarterly will be just that.
Who is involved?
Of course, I will always be around!
I’ve also recruited a small group of fantastic folks I call Redwood Rangers. They come from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds and will be present to help facilitate some of the more organic conversations.
If you're wondering if Redwoods is for you, I've structured the community to priorize anyone who:
- Aligns with the values above
- Desires to grow in their craft
- Wants to make a sustainable impact in the industry
If that sounds like you, it's likely you'll be a fantastic addition to the community.
Why does it cost money?
The investment ($20 per month or $200 per year) is intended to fit well within a standard education budget and cover the costs we’ll have as a group (mostly things like license fees for the tools we’ll use). In order to keep the investment reasonable for Redwoods members, I will be actively looking for additional forms of revenue—things like sponsorship and ticket sales to attend The Quarterly—so that we can have resources to keep the community thriving.
Why did you start Redwoods?
Over many years, I’ve conducted hundreds of interviews with design system leads across company sizes. I’ve facilitated industry surveys, researched the impact a company’s culture has on it’s design system, put this research to work with many organizations, and I’ve learned a lot.
The Problem
In all of that research, the biggest gap I’ve identified is that companies don’t know how to support the teams doing this work. We are leaving these people on an island, and it’s resulting in design systems that don’t generate the results we had hoped for. I'm someone who believes in the impact a design system can have—I’ve seen it work—but systems have to be nurtured.
The way we do that is by nurturing the people working on them.
I know how much money companies (like yours) are investing in design systems. I know how long they’ve been trying and how many times they’ve had to restart. I’m here to tell you, it doesn’t have to be that way.
The Opportunity
To address all of this, I've started Redwoods—a committed community for people working on design systems. This is a safe place where we can talk about the real challenges we’re facing, support each other though those challenges, and start to generate the results we’ve been promising. And beyond all of this, we are makers. Joining Redwoods is committing to share what you're learning with the larger community.
Why Join?
I was in Muir Woods a few years ago. This is a coastal redwood forest—a genuinely spiritual place to visit. The ground is covered in pine needles, there is no noise, the smell is so pure… And you’re surrounded by trees as tall as the Statue of Liberty. It’s truly breathtaking.
When people first moved into the area, they cut down these trees for the lumber but would always leave a few standing. Inevitably, after a short time, those trees that were left would fall over.
You see, even though these trees are hundreds of feet tall, their roots only go down about ten feet. Those same roots grow out, horizontally, as much as 80 feet and intertwine with roots of other redwoods in the area. These trees actually hold each other up.
This is what Redwoods Design System Community is. We need a space to hold each other up, to support each other. I believe there’s an authentic way to do that through this very community. I hope you’ll come along.

Confidentiality
Redwoods aims to strike a balance between people being willing to share enough that we can all learn together and the necessary confidentiality we need to create a safe space for hard conversations. For this reason, I ask that specific stories and examples not be shared outside of Redwoods communication channels. Screenshots, text, videos or audio captures, etc. are considered confidential to this community.
Part of what we also want is to be a community of people who are sharing what we learn with the larger design system community. This is encouraged, but requires that any learnings be made appropriately anonymous before sharing. If in doubt, reach out Ben in Discord to verify your approach.
If you feel this ideal balance has not been upheld in a published communication or on social media, please reach out to Ben via Discord to discuss.
